Acupuncture and IVF
IVF Treatment is often lengthy, expensive, and stressful. Therefore using safe, low cost, supporting treatments that improve success rates and reduce costs makes good sense.
What the research shows
Since 2002 there has been a growing body of research evidence that shows acupuncture enhances the success rate of IVF, culminating in a comprehensive study completed in 2008 showing the benefits may be large: a 65 per cent increase in the chance of becoming pregnant, and a 91 per cent increase in the number of live births when acupuncture was used before and after embryo transfer.
How is acupuncture used?
The key aspect of using acupuncture to assist IVF success is to have acupuncture just before or just after the time of embryo transfer. A acupuncture treatment involves having extremely fine acupuncture needles placed in specific points in the body in order to maximise the body's receptiveness to the embryo. The exact mechanism by which acupuncture assists this to occur is not fully understood however the relaxing effects of acupuncture are considered to play a major part.
