Acupuncture and IVF

Acupuncture IVF Support

Acupuncture has proven to be a safe and inexpensive treatment that enhances the success of IVF, with a growing body of research evidence to support its use.

In addition, the relaxing benefits of acupuncture helps women through what can be a difficult and challenging process with many reporting benefits such as better sleep, a heightened ability to cope and improvements in mood and self confidence.

What the research shows

Since 2002 the balance of research evidence shows acupuncture significantly enhances the success rate of IVF. A particularly comprehensive study completed in 2008 showed the benefits can be large: a 65 per cent increase in the chance of becoming pregnant, and a 91 per cent increase in the number of live births when acupuncture was used before and after embryo transfer.

How is acupuncture used?

  • Prior to IVF acupuncture is used to help maximize fertility by increasing blood supply to the uterus and ovaries and in hormone regulation to support follicle development.
  • During an IVF cycle, acupuncture is used prior to and after embryo transfer to help with successful implantation.
  • An acupuncture treatment involves having extremely fine acupuncture needles placed in specific points in the body in order to maximise the body's receptiveness to the IVF process.
  • Research has yet to show the exact mechanism by which acupuncture assists this to occur, however the relaxing effects of acupuncture are considered to play a major part.

However if you’re already in the midst of a cycle and have a transfer coming up soon it is possible to just set up appointments around your transfer dates. We are as flexible as possible around your transfer dates so we can be here to support you when you need it most.
