Acupuncture and Back Pain: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views pain as arising from a disruption in the free flow of qi and blood. When qi and blood move smoothly through the body, comfort and ease of movement are maintained.

This flow can become restricted in various areas of the body, including muscles, joints, ligaments and the back.

In TCM theory, stagnation may arise from factors such as physical injury (for example, whiplash or muscle strain), internal patterns of deficiency, or environmental influences such as cold or damp exposure. Often, a combination of factors may be present when someone experiences back pain.

Acupuncture and TCM are commonly used to support people experiencing back discomfort. Treatment focuses on identifying contributing patterns within the TCM framework and encouraging improved flow and balance.

TCM approaches may include acupuncture, moxibustion (traditional Chinese heat therapy), cupping, herbal medicine, or a combination of these, depending on the individual presentation.

As your TCM practitioner, Sally will determine the most appropriate treatment approach for your specific presentation, with the aim of supporting improved comfort and mobility.

Sally has a special interest in supporting couples navigating fertility challenges as well as continuing to support women throughout pregnancy and beyond.
