Why Your Brain Can Be an Overenthusiastic Bodyguard - What quantum physics, chronic pain and toast have in common...

Imagine you're sitting in a cinema. The lights go down, the movie begins and within minutes you're crying over a cute dog or gripping the armrest because a seriously nasty character is chasing someone who really should have stayed home.

Your body knows it isn't real...yet it responds as if it is.

Our nervous systems are extraordinary storytellers.

As a therapist working with chronic pain, I'm endlessly fascinated by how the brain and body create our experience of the world. One of the scientists who inspired this curiosity was the brilliant physicist Dr John Archibald Wheeler. Wheeler, a colleague of Einstein and the man who coined the term black hole, spent much of his career asking one enormous question:

What is reality, really?

His work in quantum physics suggested that, at the smallest scales, the universe isn't quite as fixed and predictable as we once imagined. Rather than seeing ourselves as passive spectators, Wheeler described us as participants in the unfolding of reality.

Now before anyone worries that I've swapped physiotherapy for quantum mysticism, let me reassure you! Quantum physics does not tell us that we can think away a broken leg or magically manifest a parking space (although I remain hopeful about the latter).

What it does remind us, is something equally profound:

Where we place our attention matters.

Fortunately, modern neuroscience says exactly the same thing.

Your Brain is a Prediction Machine

One of the biggest discoveries in pain science over the past twenty years is that the brain isn't simply recording what's happening in the body. Instead, it's constantly making predictions about what is happening and what might happen next.

Think of your brain as the world's busiest detective.  Every second it asks:

  • Am I safe?

  • Is this movement dangerous?

  • Should I protect this area?

  • Have I seen this pattern before?

It then combines information from your body, your memories, your beliefs, your emotions and your environment to create your experience.

Pain, in many cases, is one of the brain's protective outputs.

Sometimes this protective alarm is incredibly helpful. If you step on a drawing pin, you'll be delighted your nervous system works so efficiently.

But sometimes the alarm becomes overprotective.

It's like a smoke detector that goes off every time you make toast.

When the Alarm Won't Switch Off

Many people living with chronic pain have incredibly sensitive nervous systems.

This doesn't mean the pain is "all in your head."

It means the brain has become exceptionally good at protecting you.

Often, that protection has developed after years of physical injury, stress, trauma, loss, illness or simply living in survival mode.

The nervous system learns. If it has learnt that the world is dangerous, it keeps scanning for evidence that confirms that prediction.

That's not weakness.

That's biology.

So Where Do Emotions Fit In?

Here's where my work may look a little different.

Emotions aren't just thoughts floating around in our heads. Every emotion has a physical component.

Think about anxiety.

Most people can feel it somewhere:

  • tight chest

  • clenched jaw

  • butterflies in the stomach

  • tension in the neck

  • shallow breathing

The body is always joining the conversation.

When difficult emotions are repeatedly pushed away or never fully processed, the nervous system may remain on high alert.

In therapy, we gently become curious about these body sensations—not to analyse them endlessly, but to notice them with compassion rather than fear.

Interestingly, neuroscience shows that simply bringing kind, non-judgemental attention to internal sensations can reduce threat responses and improve emotional regulation. At these moments, pain can change, in some cases dramatically.

Compassion is Surprisingly Good Medicine

Many of us have spent years arguing with our bodies.

"Why won't you behave?"

"Why am I still in pain?"

"What is wrong with me?"

It's a bit like shouting at a frightened puppy and wondering why it refuses to come closer.

Instead, we begin developing a different relationship.

Curiosity. Kindness. Safety.

As the nervous system experiences repeated moments of safety, it gradually learns that not every sensation requires an emergency response.

Over time, many people notice less guarding, easier movement, improved sleep and, often, less pain.

Not because we forced the pain away...

...but because the body no longer needed to shout quite so loudly.

The Wonderful News

The brain remains changeable throughout life.

Scientists call this neuroplasticity. I simply think of it as hope. Your nervous system learnt to become protective. It can also learn to feel safe again.

·         No magic.

·         No blame.

·         No pretending the pain isn't real.

Just a compassionate partnership between brain, body and nervous system that allows healing to become possible.

After all, if your brain can learn to keep the alarm switched on, it can also learn when it's finally safe to switch it down.

And unlike your smoke detector after burnt toast, your nervous system is wonderfully capable of learning something new.
