Busy, Tired, Tense? Your Body Might Be Asking for a Pause

Sometimes I stop to reflect on how busy life can get if we let it.

There are emails to answer, children and pets to care for, work deadlines, appointments, meals to prepare and a seemingly endless list of things that need your attention.

Somewhere in amongst all of that doing, you stop noticing how you're actually feeling. Unless you create a habit of pausing to take stock.

You realise your shoulders are sitting a little higher than usual. Your jaw is clenched. Your neck feels tight. You're tired, but finding it difficult to truly switch off.

I like to think that our body is wise. It LOVES it when we slow down to listen.

We don't always notice how much we're carrying

Our bodies are constantly responding to what is happening around us.

Long hours at a desk, repetitive movements, exercise, caring for others, travelling, stress and simply moving through a busy week can all influence how we feel physically.

Sometimes tension becomes so familiar that we barely notice it anymore.

We just accept that our shoulders are always tight.

That our lower back feels stiff after sitting.

That we haven't properly relaxed in weeks.

That feeling tired has become our normal.

Massage as a moment to step away

One of my all time favourite modalites for relaxing and unwinding is massage.

It can offer something that can be surprisingly difficult to create in everyday life: dedicated time to stop.

One of the beautiful things about massage is its simplicity.

You arrive.

You put your phone away.

You lie down.

And for a little while, there is nowhere else you need to be.

A relaxation massage can provide a quiet space to slow down and enjoy some uninterrupted time for yourself, while a remedial massage is suited to people wanting a more targeted approach to areas of muscular tension or physical discomfort.

Personally, I like to mix it up and try different types of massage depending on my needs at the time. If I’m tight and sore, I love a deep tissue remedial massage for myofascial release. If I just need to unwind and feel nurtured, I go with a relaxation massage.

You don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted

We often think of self-care as something we do once everything else is taken care of.

But when is everything ever completely taken care of?

Waiting until you're completely depleted before giving yourself permission to rest can mean that rest always comes last.

Instead, consider making time for your body part of your regular routine.

Not because you have to.

Not because you've "earned" it.

Simply because you live in your body every day and it deserves deep reverence, love and care.

A chance to reconnect with your body

Massage can also be an opportunity to notice.

How am I actually feeling?

Where am I holding tension?

Have I been rushing?

Have I been sitting for too long?

Have I been giving everyone else my attention while forgetting to check in with myself?

Sometimes lying quietly and receiving a massage gives us the space to become aware of things we haven't had time to notice.

And perhaps that's part of the gift of slowing down.
